I love their performance of George Crumb’s Black Angles (one of the scariest pieces ever written) and their tribute to jazz pianist Bill Evans (one of my musical heros).

A million years ago, my dad played second violin in the Kronos. He’d tell me about it when I was a kid, but I never paid any attention (avant-garde chamber music wasn’t my thing at age 10). I eventually forgot about it completely. Then in my early 20s – when I was listening to them a lot on my own – I called him to tell him about my “discovery.” It took him a minute to realize I wasn’t joking. This time, of course, I was totally impressed – he suddenly had all this street cred :)

I’m looking forward to “Cello Song” (the Books featuring Jose Gonzalez) – especially if it’s the one by Nick Drake. It would have been cool to see the Kronos collaborate with one of these artists – like David Byrne, Beirut or Yeasayer.
