Cambridge! Somerville! Boston! Allston Rock City! Late notice, but I’m guest DJing at Tourfilter‘s monthly residency at River Gods, just outside Central Square, Cambridge this week: Thursday, September 16th, and the festivities start at 9 pm. Seattle: Rane/Serato Scratch Live demo

Ever wondered what DJs are doing at their laptops? (protip: don’t ask them the question implied above). Mukilteo, WA’s Rane, who makes the audio interface hardware for the Serato Scratch Live DJ software, is hosting a demo this Friday, June 26th at the War Room in Seattle. There’ll be music and giveaways, and you can finally learn what’s happening on the other side of the screen.

Threesome: Women in techno(logy)

In honor of Ada Lovelace Day, which celebrates women in technology, today’s posting is focusing on women in techno. DJ’ing as a whole is incredibly male-dominated, and I thought it would be great to highlight some females who are getting the crowd moving from behind the decks.

Classically-trained pianist Kate Simko came of age in Chicago at the height of the Midwest rave scene. On the one hand, she has formal training in music technology and composition; conversely, she was a key player in the Chicago electronica scene, including hosting the well-known Chicago night, Wake Up! Her own tracks reflect her roots in both Chicago house and Detroit techno.

Techno DJ and producer Ellen Allien (pictured) is based in Berlin. She organized the BPitch parties there and eventually started her own label, BPitch Control. She’s released several solo albums as well as a collaboration with Apparat, and her own compositions are experimentally-oriented techno/electro hybrids.

Finally, Seattle’s own Chloe Harris is best known for her DJing (including touring with John Digweed), for her show on Proton Radio, and for mixing up her genres to make her unique sound. She’s just started creating her own tracks, and here’s one of them.

Remix the new Deadmau5 on your iPhone

Here’s yet another new concept in music distribution. Toronto-based electronic artist Deadmau5 released an album’s worth of tracks with an iPhone application that lets you remix them. You can pick two of the ten included tracks, and then mix them together using a small set of effects (loop, filter, flange, delay). You can even scratch. The one thing you don’t get to do (or have to do – how you feel about it depends on your perspective and experience) is beat-matching—the two tracks are automagically synched, and while you can speed up or slow down the bpm, the tempi for both tracks change simultaneously. While the app does an interesting end-run around iTunes pricing restrictions (it’s only $2.99), it’s mostly just ridiculously fun to play with.

Bootlegging vinyl

Interesting Resident Advisor article on bootlegged vinyl albums, with a focus on electronic music. It’s kind of a perfect storm – DJs and aficionados are always looking for rare tracks, digital masters are more widely available, the quantities are small enough that it’s rarely worth it for the artist to file lawsuits, and bricks-and-mortar music stores are already struggling, so they have an incentive to look the other way.

The future is here

I’ve seen a decent number of DJs perform using setups that were not all that different from this, other than having a sound system that was many orders of magnitude better (and louder).
