Watch local: Do It Again

In an earlier post about Kickstarter, I gave the example of how the producers of a documentary about The Kinks were funding its editing through small donations. That movie, Do It Again, premiered in March at the Cleveland International Film Festival to positive reviews, and will be showing in Somerville at the Independent Film Festival Boston on Saturday, April 24th. I haven’t seen it yet, but it looks to be less of a music documentary and more of a Nick Hornby/Studs Terkel mash-up, in that it isn’t so much about The Kinks as it is about how people (creator/star Geoff Edgers in particular, but also the people he enlists in his quest) think, or even obsess, about the band. And while the Hornbyish narrative story of a quest to reunite The Kinks is intimately tied a single band, it can be seen as a lens for thinking about the Terkel-ish question of why people love the bands they love and how that love shapes them. In that sense, it seems like a good pairing for The Heart is a Drum Machine — One asks “What is music?”; the other asks “What does music mean?”.

Watch: The Heart Is A Drum Machine

What is music?

That’s the central question behind The Heart is a Drum Machine, a feature-length documentary from Lightyear Entertainment (Moog). It’s addressed by a host of interviewees, mostly musicians, with a sound engineer, a couple of scientists, and an author thrown in for color. A discussion of the Voyager Golden Record project bookends the film, in which the creative director on the project, Ann Druyan, talks about the universality of music to humanity, and the hope that it would prove to be able to communicate beyond our species:  “Hey, that’s a cool planet – they’re making some good music.”

The musicians vary widely in how articulate they are about music, with Wayne Coyne, predictably, at the high end, and Isaac Brock at the low—to be fair, musicians have a whole other vocabulary that they use to answer that question every day. And I never, ever want to hear someone unironically use the word ‘synergize’ with reference to art (I’m looking at you, Juliette Lewis). But many of the interviewees are engaging, funny or thought-provoking. One of the more interesting segments in the film is on deaf musicians, who ‘hear’ the music through physical vibrations alone (the short discussion on how they can tell they’re in tune is fascinating).

As a film, it focuses on presenting multiple facets of the experience of music, so it doesn’t really strongly develop an overall theme. But the individual pieces are mostly intriguing, and at a very brief 73 minutes, it’s definitely worth checking out.

Pansy Division’s multimedia extravaganza

Seminal* queer pop-punk band Pansy Division is back with a vengeance, debuting a new album, a film, and a memoir.

The album is That’s So Gay, out on Alternative Tentacles. Pansy Division sounds tight, which I imagine is a consequence of their stable lineup, but musically and lyrically, it’s not a departure from their previous work, which is just fine – they’ve never been a band that had pretensions to being anything else. Songs like “Pat Me on the Ass” and “20 Years of Cock” combine catchy songwriting with Pansy Division’s trademark sexual exuberance and fit comfortably with other PD faves. The one exception is “Average Men,” with guest Jello Biafra – its sound is harder (and its humour  considerably more biting) than the rest of the tracks.

The film is Pansy Division: Life in a Gay Rock Band, a documentary that started life as a graduation requirement for bassist Chris Freeman’s film degree.  It’s currently out on DVD and is being screened around the country. You can find out more about it or order a copy here.

The memoir is Jon Ginoli’s Deflowered: My Life in Pansy Division, a history of Pansy Division from its inception in 1990 to the present. It draws heavily from tour diaries, including the one kept by Ginoli in 1994 when they were tapped by Green Day to open for their arena tour. The memoir is an inside look at how an indie band deals with the challenges of life on the road, dealing with the record label, trying to get albums out, and trying to keep a drummer (Pansy Division could envy Spinal Tap; over the course of the lifetime of the band, they’ve gone through a dozen drummers, albeit none fatally). Of course, they faced the added challenge of dealing with marginalization and homophobia, on the road and off; Ginoli speaks matter-of-factly of women in the audience forming a human chain to protect the band while they were loading out their gear. Ginoli’s writing voice is frank and sincere, and it’s an engaging read.

Pansy Division has a special place in the heart of z=z, since their last Cambridge show featured in its very first post. And that show seems to have a warm place in Ginoli’s heart too, as he writes, “…we played the larger downstairs room of the Middle East…Combine great stage sound with a slew of crazed, screaming fans up front who knew all the words, and the result was probably the best show of the tour.”

Ginoli’s currently on a book tour, promoting the book and the documentary, with readings at a Boston Barnes and Noble on Tuesday, April 14th and  at the Brookline Booksmith on Wednesday, April 15th, and a screening of  the documentary at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, also on the 15th. Watch: Speaking in Code

After four years in production, Speaking in Code, a vérité-style documentary about the world of techno, is set to hit the big screen. The film features techno artists such as Modeselektor, Monolake, Wolfgang Voigt (a co-founder of the influential Kompakt label) as well as local faces Smartypants (Mike Uzzi) and Six Million Dollar Dan (Dan Paluska). It’s set to premiere at the Somerville Theatre on Thursday, April 23rd, as part of Independent Film Festival Boston. You can buy a festival pass now, and individual tickets will be on sale shortly.

Upcoming: Documentary, It Might Get Loud

Davis Guggenheim, the director and one of the producers of The Inconvenient Truth, just screened his new documentary, It Might Get Loud, at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Rather than focusing on an artist, this is a music documentary that focuses on an instrument, the electric guitar. A trio of musicians tell their stories: guitar legends Jimmy Page and The Edge get to step out of the shadow of their larger-than-life frontmen and take centre stage, together with Jack White (who is also the larger-than-life frontman, of course, and he’s still a legend-in-progress at this point). All three talk about coming to the instrument, as well as about the art and craft of songwriting and playing. I imagine that this film was, or soon will be, picked up for distribution – I certainly plan on keeping an eye out for it to make it to a theatre (or at least a Netflix queue) near me.

Watch: Mission of Burma’s remastering process

Matador Records remastered the first three Mission of Burma releases: Signals, Calls and Marches; Vs.; and The Horrible Truth About Burma, to create the ‘definitive’ versions that came out on March 18, 2008. They documented the remastering process, and put four videos up on YouTube. Music production geeks and MoB fans rejoice!
